Technology

SAFELipo® and expansion vibration lipofilling (EVL) use existing instrumentation in a groundbreaking way that—when combined with innovative techniques—produce body contouring results unattainable with traditional liposuction and fat grafting procedures. Not only are the aesthetic outcomes dramatically improved, but surgeries also have an extraordinary safety profile.

Innovative Use of Technology

The technology used to perform SAFELipo and EVL includes:

  • Power-assisted liposuction
  • Angled, exploded-tip, 4-mm vibrating cannulas
  • Closed, sterile canister-style filter fat harvesting and separation system
  • Peristaltic (roller) pumps that eliminate manual fat grafting

Using these tools enables SAFELipo surgeons to gently extract fat and prepare it for grafting with a gravity-based filter process that eliminates the need to spin the tissue in a centrifuge. This enhances the amount of viable fat cells that can be used for grafting.

Traditional fat grafting techniques such as fat centrifugation, syringe transfer, and microdroplet injection can result in extended operative times. This limits the ability to perform other procedures during the same operation and may represent an additional safety risk for elective cosmetic surgery patients undergoing general anesthesia.

SAFELipo vs. Traditional Liposuction Technology

The novel use of technology adapted to the SAFELipo process leads to reduced procedure time, enhanced control and precision, and improved outcomes with virtually zero risk of contour deformities. Extracting fat using power-assisted liposuction is both faster and easier, resulting in a larger percentage of viable fat available for grafting.

Traditional manual liposuction requires the surgeon to vigorously move the cannula back and forth through the treatment area, causing more trauma to surrounding tissue and damage to fat cells, rendering many of them useless for grafting if desired. This results in more bruising and bleeding and, in many cases, longer recovery times than seen with PAL.

SAFELipo vs. Thermal Liposuction

Heat-based methods such as laser, radiofrequency (RF), or ultrasonic liposuction can damage fat cells and burn adjacent tissue. The MicroAire® Surgical Instruments power-assisted cannula used during SAFELipo works by gently moving back and forth at speeds that are barely detectable by the eye. The cannula easily passes through tissue and offers the surgeon greater precision and control. Patients benefit because the cannula passes through tissue without damaging micro-vessels, and leaves the fat cells, (called adipocytes), intact for autologous grafting.

Innovative Fat Grafting Technique Honored

A research paper describing expansion vibration lipofilling (EVL) was named “Best United States Paper 2018” by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal, one of the most prestigious journals in all of surgery. EVL is a technique used as part of SAFELipo’s 3-step process, enhancing the safety, comfort, and results of large-volume fat grafting, including for Brazilian butt lift procedures.
